AND so Simon’s circus is back with us.

Yes, the X-Factor returned on Saturday night and pulled in millions of viewers.

Am I the only person who thinks that this is a horrible, hateful programme.

Along with Big Brother (which thankfully even the viewing public have begun to tire of) it is a programme which sums up the malaise which is affecting so much of our society.

Just because you’ve queued up for a couple of hours and can cross your arms robot fashion while shouting the mantra “I’ve got the X-Factor” doesn’t mean you have any talent.

Let’s face it, the majority of people who go on to the show are hopeless, talentless wannabes who think that simply by making fools of themselves on TV they’ll achieve celebrity status.

Sadly, in many cases they are actually right which is why I hate the programme even more. It’s the Victorian freak show for the internet era, with Simon Cowell presiding over the whole thing like a ring master.

Either there are a huge number of people suffering from delusions – no madam, there will only ever be one Madonna – or our standards have slipped to new levels of awfulness.

Contrast the X-Factor wannabes with the great TV highlight this weekend – the Olympics. Our medal winning rowers, cyclists and sailors have dedicated their lives to their sport – now that’s talent!
